Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full‐time tenure track Assistant Professor position in Film + Screen Arts within the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM). The Bachelor of Media Arts in The Film + Screen Arts, situated in the Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM), is grounded in hands‐on, project‐based instruction and is dedicated to the exploration of a variety of media using both contemporary digital media and traditional analogue practices. The program provides a theoretical, historical and critical framework within which students master the conceptual and practical skills for producing film, video, installation, sound and other forms of media art. Students are encouraged to develop their artistic voice within a context of artistic expression, formal exploration, and engagement with social and political issues. All majors in the DDM Faculty share values and goals in areas of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, critical engagement with technology, new research methods, new approaches to design and media, and the making of imaginative and provocative work.

Candidates should possess the ability to teach students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be expected to contribute to the development of new curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. The successful candidates will join a dynamic team of cross‐disciplinary Dynamic Media faculty from across the Film + Screen Arts and Animation majors. Candidates should be equally fluent in current media and visual culture discourses and studio practices, and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the discipline. Faculty are expected to contribute to curriculum development and planning, participate in portfolio reviews and upper‐level critiques, provide undergraduate and graduate student supervision, engage in research, serve on administrative committees, and be an active and engaged member of the Emily Carr community.

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications and/or related experience:
  •  terminal degree or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience in filmmaking, media, and screen arts;
  •  experience in postsecondary teaching in a collaborative teaching environment;
  •  expertise in craft, technical and/ or digital skills, clear understanding of traditional/ formal media principles;
  •  extensive knowledge of film and media production, with specific expertise in at least two of the following areas: film production, film scoring / sound design, script writing and concept development, editing and advanced post production workflows, media installation;
  •  conversant with two of the following theme or genre areas: documentary, narrative, experimental, expanded media arts practices, emerging technologies, or media installation;
  •  an emergent research practice which might be technological, aesthetic, or engaging new forms expanding the traditions of cinema, and/or media arts;
  •  intercultural competence: the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of various cultures is expected.

Subject to budgetary approval, we anticipate commencement in August 20210. Salary and rank will be commensurate with professional status and teaching experience.
