Located in Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People, in the beautiful city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, NSCAD University is one of Canada’s oldest independent cultural institutions. With three campuses within Halifax’s downtown core, NSCAD continues to be regarded as a principal centre for education and research in visual culture in North America. Formerly the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, NSCAD University is an internationally recognized centre for the study, practice, and teaching of visual arts. Reporting to the Vice-President, Academic & Research, the Dean will provide strategic and operational leadership and develop and enhance a culture of collegiality and engagement through consultation and collaboration with faculty, staff and students. The Dean is responsible for advancing and operationalizing the strategic vision and the academic strategy of the University. Fostering a positive spirit of collaboration, the Dean empowers and mentors faculty to realize their potential as educators, practitioners and researchers. Recognizing the valuable contributions of indigenous, international, multilingual, and cross-cultural communities, the Dean will seize the opportunity to implement the EDI action plan. In collaboration with the Vice-President, Academic & Research, the Dean provides advocacy and leadership for curricular reform, pedagogical reform, program review, and academic assessment.

The ideal candidate will possess a terminal degree (Masters-level or PhD) in a relevant discipline with a background as a practicing artist, designer, or scholar. They will demonstrate a distinguished leadership record in academic administration, a solid demonstration of management, leadership and decision-making experience, as well as active community involvement. The ideal candidate will evidence extensive successful post-secondary teaching and administrative experience and a commitment to open communication and collaboration among a diverse University community of artists, designers, media practitioners, and academics including students, faculty and staff. They will possess sound experience in an interdisciplinary model of art, design and media education delivery and in working effectively with student and curriculum support professionals.
