Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full‐time tenure track Assistant or Associate
Professor position in Industrial Design within the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media. Situated on unceded,
traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl ̱ ilwโ ̓ətaʔɬ
(Tsleil‐Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada.


SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Candidates should possess the ability to teach students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Masters of Design
programs, and will be expected to contribute to developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the
interrelation of theory and practice. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of cross‐disciplinary design
faculty comprising industrial design, interaction design, and communication design. Candidates should be equally
fluent in design discourse and studio practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands
of the discipline. Additionally, faculty are expected to participate in portfolio reviews, upper‐level design critiques,
provide undergraduate and graduate student supervision, serve on administrative committees, engage in
research and be an active member of the Emily Carr community.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:
 Master’s in Design (or terminal degree in related discipline);
 strong evidence of exceptional work within industrial design;
 a minimum of two years of experience alongside post‐secondary teaching, design practice and research,
 intercultural competence, the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of various
cultures.
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in:
 community and social innovation;
 knowledge of and focus on sustainable design;
 ecological literacy;
 product‐service‐systems;
 systems thinking; and
 new paradigms of making and sharing.
Candidates must:
 Possess the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary design teams on curriculum focusing on ethical
design practices addressing cultural, socio/political, and sustainability issues.
 be fluent in participatory and practice‐led design research methods, and understand the importance of
full‐scale iterative modeling as a part of the design process.
