University of Alberta - Faculty of Arts
We are one of the oldest and most diverse Faculties on campus. As one of the largest research and teaching centres in western Canada, we are practically a university within a university.
The Faculty of Arts houses over 20 departments and interdisciplinary programs and numerous institutes. With approximately 6,000 students, we account for more than one-fifth of the university's total undergraduate program registrations.
Several of our departments are ranked indisputably among the finest in Canada. These include Drama - the most sought-after theatre school in the country - as well as English, Linguistics, Art & Design and Psychology.
Teaching & Research Excellence
The Faculty of Arts is home to high-ranking Canada Research Chairs in English & Film Studies, Economics, Political Science, Philosophy, Printmaking and History & Classics. They lead our faculty and students in innovative, world-class research and teaching.
Three of our current professors - David Barnet in Drama, David Kahane in Political Science and Connie Varnhagen in Psychology - hold prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowships, Canada's highest award for undergraduate university teaching excellence.
Envisioning Arts in the 21st Century
The Faculty of Arts undertakes groundbreaking research and creative activity examining all aspects of the human experience. Through teaching excellence, we instill the foundational skills that lead to change in a complex world.
